My name is Fernando Torres, I am 27 years old and I was born in Mexico City. I am the youngest of two children, my mother graduated in pedagogy and my father was is a urological surgeon. I am also a doctor and I am currently studying my last year of specialty in medical pediatrics in my country of origin. My accident happened on December 10, 2015, while I was painting my house. Christmas was coming and I always had a great Christmas spirit, I wanted my house to look very beautiful. I was on the third floor, painting with a roller without noticing the closeness of high voltage cables. Accidentally, I touched those cables with the instrument and received an electric shock. I do not remember what time it happened. Reacting within s few seconds of being electrocuted immediately my clothes began to burn, adhering to my skin. My sister was there, she called the firefighters and ambulance also the rest of the family. I was taken to the burn unit of Orthopedics and Traumatology “Magdalen de las Salina” of the Mexican Social Security Institute. The diagnosis was second and third-degree burns with 38% of my body burned.
I underwent 21 surgeries between grafts, surgical debridements and zetoplasties. I was hospitalized for 4 months of which I spent two weeks in intensive care because of the severity of the burns. I was at risk of losing my right arm but in the end, doctors managed to save it. It was a very difficult experience, a lot of rehabilitation therapy both physical and mental, I recognize the work of such excellent doctors that helped me to get ahead, because of my studies I know it was difficult to save me. I worked hard to get ahead, the biggest motivation was my career, it was very difficult to begin my specialty because the most affected parts of my body were my hands and arms. but I made it. My dream now is to be able to help people and mainly children who have gone through this type of misfortune cause the treatment of burn people is very complicated and needs the best specialists. Now I also know, everything can be achieved, you just need to believe.
