Christy Sims is a native of Atlanta and currently resides in McDonough, Georgia. She is a nationally Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from Georgia Southern University and a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Mercer University. She is a member of the American Association of Counselors, and Chi Sigma Iota National Counseling Honor Society.

Christy was most recently employed as a mental health and substance abuse counselor at STAND, Inc., a non-profit organization which provides counseling, education and housing for men. This organization also provides domestic violence intervention and conflict resolution for abusers. In her role as a counselor, she provided individual counseling and facilitated therapy groups for men struggling with addiction and mental health issues. She was also involved in educating, testing, counseling and community outreach for those struggling with HIV and AIDS.

Prior to changing careers and pursuing counseling in 2010, Christy was the broker and owner of Metro Atlanta Real Estate Services. During this time, she also provided community service by conducting first time homebuyer education classes in conjunction with the NAACP. She is a 16-year veteran of real estate and still holds a Georgia broker license. Her other affiliations over the years include the National Association of Realtors, Mary Kay, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Atlanta and 100 Black Women of Atlanta.

Christy is a devoted mother of two children whose life was forever changed on April 28, 2013, when her ex-boyfriend severely disfigured her by dousing her with sulfuric acid. She sustained 3rd and 4th degree burns to over 20 percent of her body, including her entire face, neck, chest and arms. After the incident, she remained in a coma for two months and endured numerous lifesaving surgeries at the Grady Burn Unit in Atlanta. She emerged from the coma with a resolve to survive, to return to her children and to pursue the prosecution of her abuser.

Christy is currently undergoing the first of many surgeries to reconstruct her disfigured face and has a long and challenging process ahead of her. However, her personal struggle has propelled her to advocate and support other victims of domestic violence. She has been vigilant and outspoken about her case in various media outlets including V-103, WAOK, 104.7, The Tom Joyner Morning Show, Channel 2 Action News, Fox 5 Atlanta, CBS Channel 46, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Jet Magazine and Headline News. She has also been featured in numerous blogs in the US and the UK. Her story has touched the lives of many and possibly prevented other cases of domestic violence. Christy was recently recognized with the Delta Sigma Atlanta Alumnae Chapter’s Celebration of Women Fortitude Award on April 12, 2014.

The Christy Sims Foundation was founded in 2014 by Christy and some of her supporters to provide education and programming to the community and grants and assistance to victims of domestic violence and their children. The mission of the Christy Sims Foundation is to educate the community, increase awareness and raise funds to support victims of domestic violence and provide resources to help them rebuild their lives.
